I’ve spent 9 days so far with Fred Hutch, and I really enjoyed every single one of them. We meet every morning at 9, a little early to me, which meant I was sleepy most of the day. However, some things we’d do would really wake me up, and get me really excited. To be specific, I’m referring to the activities we’d do in the lab. Lab time is really fun, and gives you that kind of hands-on experience you don’t really get in school. It feels great to wear a real lab coat, while working in a real lab, working with real materials used by real scientists. Getting to work with everyone in my session felt really nice. Everyone is really nice, supportive, and fun. If you make a mistake, who’s gonna care? (Unless you break something. That’s probably gonna cost you a bit). We’re all here to learn, and there is no learning if there are no mistakes :)
I got to do a lot these past two weeks, and as someone who isn’t too sure on what to do for his future, I feel like I may have a new path to walk on. I’m definitely glad I applied to join this session, and I’m definitely proud I got in. Looking back to our first day, I was very nervous. FH was a totally new environment to me, I didn’t really know anyone, and I definitely didn’t drink enough coffee. All of those have changed (except for the coffee part), and I now have friends I’d like to continue hanging out with in the future.
As we continued through the first week, we got to start working in the lab. We learned how to use a micropipette, and I had no idea what that was before last week. I’m not sure when I’m gonna need to use it again, but aye, I know how to use it ;)
I think the most fun I’ve had here is anything that has to do with gels. I love filling each slot with some kind of liquid, and then transferring it to blotting paper, only to squish and play with the remaining gel afterwards. It’s pretty fun, not gonna lie.
I’m genuinely going to miss coming here to do fun work, and I really hope next year’s session has as much fun as I did. I hope I’m able to come back and do more work. Again, my time here was actually really fun. I’m a little excited to tell my science teachers about what I got to do this summer at Fred Hutch. I don’t know EVERYTHING about cancer or biology yet, but I know more now than I did a month ago.
I’m gonna miss this place, and I plan to come back here for more internships and lessons, so if you see a kid with a Pikachu hat, you’ll know what’s up.
To everyone I worked with this session, thanks for all the fun and knowledge you brought everyday.
