This program was really fun and taught me a lot. We learned everything from CRISPR to PCR. we went through the process of taking some DNA, using PCR to make more of it, using CRISPR to cut it at very specific places, then using gel electrophoresis to see if the CRISPR worked. This was all great because when we had a lesson we would usually go do it in the lab or see other labs doing it in research. One week in, we would understand most of what actual researchers were saying when they talk about their procedures. I just learned a lot while having fun throughout this program and improved some skills like micropipetting.

Other than the labs, my favorite thing was going to the labs and seeing what research people who worked there were doing. It was fun seeing what actual professionals do in the lab. I especially liked the C. Elegans lab because the person who worked there was sitting right next to me and my partner for us to ask him as much questions as we wanted. The fly lab was also really cool. I never knew that flies are so complex until I looked at some under a microscope.

Overall this program was just very fun and informational. I learned so many new things and improved my skills in other areas (micropipetting). It was a great experience. My one complaint is that I wish it was longer although that wouldn’t give me time for summer homework. I still feel like we barely scratched the surface and wish the program was longer so we could learn more and do more lab time. It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun doing it.
