An experience that I had that was a highlight while I was in the explorer's program was the lunch that we spent with the college undergrads. Two close friends of mine and I got the opportunity to accompany our guide her name was Cleo on a tour of her lab and two other separate labs. What she did was she took samples from all different kinds of labs and she processed samples of DNA or bacteria Ext. and returned details that about that sample she was known as an all-around person because she did a bit of everything not only within her own lab but with all kinds of other labs as well.
Another highlight that I had was the lab were we got to do Gel Electrophoresis this experience really stood out to me because I had no idea what it was I had never done Gel Electrophoresis before and to be able to see and certain things are charged was super cool like I didn't know that DNA was negatively charged. Like I enjoyed working with new tools such as gel boxes and working with different kinds of RNA and CRISPR.
With the Gel Electrophoresis, I had to follow a specific set of steps to make sure that my results were as accurate and as clear as I wanted them to be. I had to start setting up and preparing my agarose so that my gel would come out as I wanted it to, then I had to prepare my samples so that I could run the test, next I loaded the samples into the wels and ran the Gel Electrophoresis, and last but not least I observed my data and how my experiment went and I recorded my results. Lucky I followed all the steps correctly and my Gel Electrophoresis came out as planned.
The entire experience of being able to be part of this program was more than just a dream come true this experience gave me options it opened my eyes to the world that is science I got to more scientific work here than I have in my entire life. Whether it be working with CRISPR in a lab or just chatting with the undergrads about some random science stuff this entire program will stay imprinted in my life forever.
Photo 1: This moment really stuck out to me because this was my first time ever using a micropipette or doing a gel electrophoresis.
Photo 2: This is a machine that was made after the patient of a lab leader passed away and what this machine does is it makes PCR product faster.
Photo 3: One of the many pieces of art that was donated to the Hutch by one of the families.
