My Experience at Fred Hutch

Coming into the Fred hutch program I thought that everything would be very competitive not very diverse and hard. I thought a lot about even applying to this program, but I needed insight on what I wanted to do in the future as a career option. And thankfully I decided to apply to the Fred hutch explorers’ program. This program has been wonderful I met my goal on gaining insight in different career options, that I might be interested in the future, we met a lot of well-educated scientists and got to listen to very interesting lectures teaching us about different types of cancers and CRISPR, a gene editing tool that in the future will be able to edit genes and has the potential of being the cure for many cancers and sickle cell anemia. But we didn’t just learn about science we had conversations and lectures about race and how people of color could be denied or overlooked on getting these types of treatments. Everyone at Fred hutch were very respectful and kind especially the staff. (IF YOU HAVE NOTHING PLANED FOR THE SUMMER JOIN THIS PROGRAM :)

If you want to gain insight or just want to learn more about biology and have a good time join the Fred hutch program.

LAB: in the lab we did many different tests and experiments.

  1. COLOR WHEEL (micro pipetting) and the metric system.

  2. DYE/INDICATOR LAB

  3. SPOT TEST (testing for PCR product)

  4. ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay)

  5. gRNA SELECTION (cutting the BRCA gene with CRISPR, CAS9)

  6. INTRO VITRO CRISPR CAS 9
